Instructor: Ellen Chester Much of Ellen’s initial inspiration came from antiques. She has always enjoyed reading about antique needlework and visiting museum and private collections. Her inspiration today continues to come from antiques and from a desire to spread the art and joy of stitching. She has created several reproductions, many original designs, and an in-between category she calls historical adaptations. Her reproductions are exactly like the antiques, including the original stitcher’s mistakes. Her original designs frequently reflect 17th and 18th century styles. Historical adaptations are based on antiques, but she makes both design and color changes when it suits her eye. By the way, she never puts an old date on a new design or adaptation, and she always clearly indicates which of these categories a particular sampler design is, so no one will think a new design is an antique reproduction. She doesn’t want to leave the subjects of inspiration and art without mentioning that she encourages people to add their own creativity when stitching her designs. She loves seeing how people make color changes, or move or add new elements. Ellen says, “How boring it would be if everyone stitched everything exactly as it's charted.
